Gabe spent five minutes pacing his bedroom after Shadow had sashayed down the hall, half regretting his actions, and half wishing he’d just kissed her.

He chided himself. Partners. They were partners.

By the time he arrived at the bottom of the stairs, someone was knocking on the front door. He dropped the first aid pack behind the door, just in case he needed both hands free, and opened it to find an attractive woman in her thirties on the other side, her wavy chestnut hair loose across her shoulders. She wore jeans and boots, a t-shirt, and a worn leather jacket.

She looked up at him and smiled, holding her hand out to shake his. “I’m Olivia James. I work with Harlan. I’m a collector with The Orphic Guild.”

He smiled, shook her hand, and welcomed her inside. “Gabe Malouf, at your pleasure. It seems our party is growing in size.”

She grinned. “It’s not every day you find a missing part of The Trinity of the Seeker.”

“I guess not.” He glanced down at her overnight bag. “Looks like you’re staying for a few days.”

She shrugged. “Maybe, maybe not, but I came prepared, just in case.”

He gestured to the bottom of the stairs. “You can leave your bag there for now, if that’s okay.”

“Sure,” she nodded, but kept her handbag over her shoulder as she walked with Gabe down the hall.

“Did Harlan ask you to come?” Gabe asked, wondering what Olivia could offer the investigation.

“Not exactly. Mason wanted me here.” She winked. “Safety in numbers.”

“Well, we’re sure getting that!”

Gabe heard the excited chatter of voices before they’d even entered the conservatory, and found the entire group in animated conversation, broken up in twos and threes as they pored over the documents.

“Hey, guys!” he shouted. “We have another visitor. Olivia James, Harlan’s colleague, is here.”

After a flurry of introductions, and Harlan’s pleased but puzzled greeting, Olivia settled in, and Gabe sat next to Alex. Alex was the witch he knew best and had met first. He’d connected with him psychically when the Nephilim were still spirits, and Gabe had been impressed at the strength of his will and power. “What do you think?” he asked quietly so as not to disturb the others.

“Of the trinity, or the protection you want?”

“Both, I guess.”

Alex glanced at the papers spread across the table. “Honestly, this temple looks like trouble, and you need to be careful. The whole thing reeks of traps and deception. But, you can look after yourself, I know that.” He shrugged, his eyes wary. “However, I’m not sure we can add anything to your understanding of the map or the path. I recognise some runes and elemental signs, but nothing you guys don’t already know. Alchemical symbols aren’t our thing. But, I always find it’s less about translating the meaning of the symbols, and more about interpreting their meaning.”

Gabe nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. But there are a lot of layers there.”

Alex looked genuinely frustrated. “Sorry. But I can certainly protect the house. I’d like to start now.
